When it comes to celebrating naturopathic medicine, Canadians definitely beat out our neighbours to the South - after all, we have Naturopathic Medicine Week, an annual national event occurring in select cities across the country to educate the public on naturopathic medicine. This year, Canada is celebrating Naturopathic Medicine Week from May 7 - 13, during which hundreds of naturopathic doctors will open their doors to provide complementary testing and consultations, and many more will head into their local communities to give talks and presentations. It's fast becoming a Canadian tradition - next year will mark Naturopathic Medicine Week's tenth anniversary! |
How we Celebrate Naturopathic Medicine Week at Boucher
At the Boucher Institute we usually celebrate Naturopathic Medicine Week with what has come to be considered B.C.'s flagship event - a campus-wide Open House that engages students, faculty, staff and the general public. Not only do faculty members (licensed NDs) give talks on disease prevention, health conditions and the modalities, our students lead demonstrations like salve making, acupuncture needling and botanical medicine making. Our Clinic always boasts the day's most popular feature - free testing and consultations with student interns and licensed NDs.
Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
Well this year construction on our campus means that we've had to postpone Open House until the fall. But we couldn't let a little jack hammering keep us from celebrating Naturopathic Medicine Week! On Saturday, May 12 we'll be holding a Clinic Open House (the fan favourite) and two free Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine seminars. You can come for one or the other, but why not grab the family or a few friends and make a day of it?
Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine - the Abridged Version
Ever wonder how seeing a naturopathic doctor can benefit you and your family? Want to know more about the roots and principles of naturopathic medicine? Not sure what people mean when they talk about "the modalities"? Our Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine seminar is an abridged version of our popular Continuing Education public lecture series that covers the basics of naturopathic medicine (including nutrition and the other modalities), and delves into the profession's rich history. This is a great talk for anyone who wants to explore the fundamentals.
We're offering this seminar at two different times on Saturday - pre-register to confirm your seat or show up on May 12 at your preferred lecture time. (See the event listing for full details.)
Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine - 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Boucher Naturopathic Medical Clinic Open House
Enjoy a wide range of complimentary testing in the Clinic (no appointment necessary, but you might want to pre-register to avoid waiting). This is a public favourite during Naturopathic Medicine Week and is suitable for all members of the family - from babies to seniors. Our brainy student interns (under the guidance of licensed NDs) are offering spinal assessments; zinc tally tests (assesses zinc levels in the body); blood pressure measuring; blood glucose testing and ABO blood typing.
There are also a limited number of 15-minute introductory consults. (Book your consult through our Clinic at 604 540 2873.)
Coming to our May 12 event doesn't mean you should miss out on our campus-wide Open House later this fall, but you can hope to gain a better understanding of the efficacy of naturopathic medicine - not to mention a better understanding of your total health picture.
Clinic Open House: 10am - 2pm (See event listing for more details)
Hope to see you there!
*All our facilities are stroller and wheelchair friendly.
